Recently, Minister of Housing and Lands, Michael Lashley, led a Barbados delegation to the XX General Assembly of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Housing and Urbanisation in Latin America and the Caribbean (MINURIV).

The conference was held in Asuncion, Paraguay, from September 14 to 16. Other members of the delegation included: Chief Town Planner, Mark Cummins and Chief Housing Planner, Patricia Barrow.

At the conclusion of this year’s General Assembly meeting, Barbados was selected, along with Cuba, to represent the Caribbean on the Executive Committee of MINURIV. The Executive Committee sets the agenda, themes and programme activities to be undertaken within MINURIV member states for the ensuing year.

MINURIV is a sub-regional organisation which was created in 1992 to provide a forum for consultation and technical coordination among the region’s ministers and officials responsible for housing and urban development. Its General Assemblies are held annually. This year, the sessions focused on three themes: The Housing Deficit, Quality and Productivity, Strengthening and Community Training in Social Housing Programmes, and Climate Change and Natural Disaster.
