Barbados has committed itself to reducing the cases of chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCDS).?? This was emphasised at the just concluded United Nations High-Level Meeting in New York.
Acting Minister of Health, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, made this disclosure while speaking at the Sandy Crest Medical Centre’s fifth anniversary celebrations, last Saturday evening.
According to Senator Sandiford-Garner, the meeting "involved governmental and civil society groups working together at the highest level, under the auspices of the United Nations, to produce global improvements in prevention and control of chronic disease."
The Acting Health Minister stated that Government, recognising the importance of prevention strategies, has "invested much in the United Nations’ Meeting."?? She alluded to the Health of the Nation Study, which has been commissioned by the Ministry of Health in support of such strategies.
"This study will investigate risk factors associated with chronic disease including tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets and low levels of physical activity," Senator Sandiford-Garner said, urging selected participants to give their full support to the initiative.
