Come Monday, November 22, the best experts in the energy sector will gather to discuss alternative energy sources, the future of oil and gas in the future energy mix and other topics when the Barbados Sustainable Energy Conference is held virtually.

The session, under the theme Championing Our Future to a Sustainable Energy Sector, will feature an address by Minister of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Kerrie Symmonds, and other local and regional experts during the opening ceremony.

The conference will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and is being held on the same day as the four-day virtual Seventh Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum, one of the events planned by CARICOM, during Energy Month.

Following the opening ceremony, there will be four panel discussions – Progress to Barbados’ 100 per cent Energy Transition; The Electricity Transition; The Potential for Wind Energy in Barbados, and Financing the Transition.

In the Energy Transition panel, technocrats drawn from the Barbados Light and Power Company Limited, the Fair Trading Commission, and the Barbados Renewable Energy Association will focus on the role of oil and gas in the future energy mix; the need for sustainable transportation options, and a progress report on the region’s energy targets.

In the second forum on Electricity Mobility, the discussion will touch on Government’s achievements in electric mobility, among other areas. Participants will hear more about the National Transportation Policy from stakeholders in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Water Resources, the Transport Board and the University of the West Indies.

Attendees will also learn more about wind energy as an alternative energy source and the studies supporting the use of this source. There will be presentations from the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, and the Caribbean Development Bank.

The conference will conclude with a discussion on the various financing options available for the energy sector from experts in the Ministry of Energy, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Barbados Bankers’ Association, and the Financial Services Commission.

After the formalities, there will be a virtual expo and networking session, and businesses and organisations are invited to apply to operate a virtual booth to showcase their products and services.
