A fresh attempt will be made to address data gaps for monitoring human development as it relates to women and children in areas such as nutrition, child discipline and education.
This will be achieved through the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) – an international household survey created and funded by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and implemented by the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS).
The survey, which has been conducted worldwide since 1995, will commence in Barbados for the first time next month.?? Preparations are already on-going to get statisticians au fait with the process when training sessions get under way from March 26.
Data collected from MICS will be used to: develop evidence-based plans and policies; to assist the government in its developmental initiatives; and to monitor social issues concerning women and children’s health, development and protection.
At the end of the exercise, the MICS survey is expected to improve the quality of other national surveys conducted in the future.
