High surf and small craft advisories are in effect for Barbados for the next several days.

This warning has come today from the Barbados Meteorological Services.

Northerly swells will be affecting the exposed northern, eastern and western coastlines of the island. These swells will cause breaking wave action that will render the surf zone unsafe, by generating strong dangerous rip currents.

Beachgoers, surfers and swimmers are therefore urged to remain onshore along the exposed coastlines until hazardous conditions subside.

Persons are advised to watch for large breaking waves surging onto shore and should avoid being near the shoreline, or in the vicinity of rock formations.

The Met Office explained that the surging waves have the potential to result in beach erosion, especially during high tide and can carry persons of all sizes into the sea.

Seas will be hazardous for small craft operators as well. Inexperienced mariners are advised to avoid navigating in these conditions, as seas of seven feet and greater are expected to generate conditions which could be unsafe for them.
