Plans are under way for Barbados to host a world road tennis tournament in the near future.

Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, made this disclosure last Friday night as he delivered brief remarks at the finals of the National Inter-Parish Road Tennis Tournament at Dover Hard Courts, Dover, Christ Church.

Mr. Lashley said Government had successfully stimulated the resurgence of road tennis, and he highlighted the number of courts and players that now exist island-wide as evidence of this.

"Actually, this year we have increased the level of participation from eight to 10 parishes, with many of the dormant players returning to the game. This is but one of the many initiatives of this Government, geared toward unifying our communities in general and, particularly, our youth," he stated.

He pointed out that in seeking to develop road tennis on a global scale, a team had conducted demonstrations in schools and villages in Venezuela. "We have also received offers from Panama, Canada, and Mexico to introduce the sport in these territories. Additionally, it is currently being played across the Caribbean and in some North American and Asian territories," he explained.

Minister Lashley complemented the management and staff of the National Sports Council for organising "yet another successful tournament" and thanked the sponsors for ensuring the development of this indigenous sport.

He noted that the HIV/AIDS Commission had also partnered with the Council during the tournament to emphasise the importance of good conduct, respect and healthy lifestyles, including moral sexual behaviour.
