Barbados will participate in the Sistema Interamericano de Metrología (SIM) Week 2019, scheduled for September 24 to 27, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce, Dwight Sutherland, and the acting Deputy Director of the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI), Hadyn Rhynd, will attend several events planned for the week of metrology.

This island’s presence at SIM Week would be of significance to the Ministry, as it seeks to modernize the BNSI via the establishment of a National Quality Infrastructure (NQI), updating legislation repealing the Weights and Measures Act and enacting new metrology legislation, and chart a new course for standards.

The Sistema Interamericano de Metrología extended an invitation to the BNSI to participate in SIM Week, an event held in collaboration with the Institution Nacional de Metrología (IBMETRO).

A key aim of the week is to provide an opportunity for National Metrology Institutes across the western hemisphere to discuss and explore collaborative exchanges that could benefit the region’s metrology infrastructure.

SIM was created to promote international, regional, and particularly Inter-American cooperation in metrology issues, and seeks to implement a global, reliable measuring system.

SIM also promotes and supports an integrated measurement infrastructure in the Americas that enables each member institution to stimulate innovation, competitiveness, trade, consumer safety and sustainable development, by effectively participating in the international metrology community.

In April 2019, when the BNSI made a formal application for admission to the SIM to be an active member, it joined 27 other National Metrology Institutes.

In so doing, the BNSI will be afforded the right, among other things, to have voting privileges of General Assembly meetings; nominate or be nominated as candidates for the different positions in SIM; access SIM official documents, including by-laws; request and receive support available through SIM-funded projects to take part in SIM activities; and host the Annual General Meeting and other SIM meetings.

SIM week will feature a metrology forum, a meeting that will discuss the role of the National Metrology Institutions in the transformation towards sustainable development experiences, and opportunities and the meeting of the General Assembly.
