Barbados should soon give formal approval to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, speaking at the pre-launch of the “Show Them Love” Public Awareness Campaign for Children with Disabilities, said that this country would be ratifying it “expeditiously”.

The Ministry is currently working with the Attorney General’s Office to look at all of its requirements because with Conventions come many commitments and therefore we want to ensure that once we ratify the agreement that we can meet those commitments…,” he explained.

Minister Sinckler added: “In fact, it is more egregious to accept responsibilities that you know that you cannot meet, or to sign on to a responsibility that you know that you cannot achieve than not signing at all.”

Barbados signed the Convention on July 19, 2007.
