Barbados has copped the first prize in both the junior and senior divisions of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association???s (FCCA) essay competition.
Bringing glory to the island is 12-year-old Azizi Alleyne of The St. Michael School, who won the junior division and beat his nearest rivals from St. Maarten and Nevis, into second and third place. In the senior division, 16-year-old Yannic Boyce, of Combermere School, was victorious over competitors from Antigua and Trinidad and Tobago, who had to settle for second and third place, respectively.
Contestants submitted an essay on the topic: What Makes my Destination Different from Others, and will receive a cash prize of US $3,000 and a similar monetary amount for their respective schools. Barbados also placed first in the FCCA???s Poster Competition which was won by 16-year-old Queen???s College student, Adiel Alleyne, who also won US $3,000 in cash and a similar prize for the school.
This year???s competition attracted entries from 19 countries. The two first place winners will accept their prizes at the FCCA Caribbean Conference slated to take place in Cartagena, Colombia, from Monday, September 30, to Friday, October 4.
All finalists, with the exception of the first, second and third place winners in each category, will receive a cash prize of US $200.
