Tourism in Barbados will continue to grow, aided by the exploration of new markets and opportunities.

This observation was made by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Andrew Cox, as he delivered the feature address at the launch of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers Week at Solidarity House last Sunday.

He said: "At the policy level…the Ministry of Tourism has undertaken and supported a number of initiatives….[the] expansion of markets through the introduction of new airlines that venture into countries that have not previously been explored as potential markets; the introduction of the low-cost carrier REDjet in order to facilitate more affordable travel between Caribbean states; and increased and diversified flights by airlines?? servicing our traditional source markets…"

Mr. Cox maintained that this development would not be limited to the sourcing of external markets, however, but would also embrace the improvement of the island’s offerings for nationals and visitors alike.

"With the recently acquired designation of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as a World Heritage Site, Barbados has been given a significant boost in its value as a first-class tourist destination.?? We can boast of possessing a World Heritage attraction in the form of an outstanding example of British colonial architecture and enduring streetscape that bears witness to the spread of Great Britain’s Atlantic colonial empire," he added.
