Barbados was awarded third place in the Junior Division of the 2009 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Foundation Children’s Essay Contest.

Nine-year old Christian Alleyne’s entry won him the third place in the regional competition, as well as allowed him to top the Junior Division at the local level of the competition.

For his third place win, Christian will receive a cash scholarship award in the amount of US$1,000, while his school will receive a cheque in the same amount. He is a student of the Soteria Home School, taught by his mother Mrs. Camille Alleyne.

Meanwhile, Christian’s 13-year old brother, Ethan Alleyne, who also attends Soteria Home School, won the Senior Division at the local end of the competition.

Others receiving awards at the local level were: Zachary Yearwood of Wills Primary, who earned second place in the Junior Division; and Machel Maynard of The Rock Christian Primary who placed third. In the Senior Division, second place was awarded to Jenevonne Kirton of the Lodge School, while third place went to William Griffin of Codrington School.

Tourism Development Officer with responsibility for Education and Awareness in the Ministry of Tourism, Marsha Armstrong, commenting on Barbados’ participation, expressed satisfaction with the pupils’ performance. "There was an overwhelming response, which saw 60 entries being received from over 25 public and private schools across the island. It is good to see our young people having a keen interest in the number one foreign exchange earner of the island."

The FCCA contest is part of the youth tourism awareness programmes?????????????????? coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism. The contest is an annual event, which encourages students of member territories of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation to think tourism and to share their creative thoughts on a given topic related to the tourist industry.??

Students were earlier invited to submit essays of 300 to 500 words on the topic: "During this global economic downturn, what can a destination which lives on tourism do to persuade more ships to come to their destination?"

Essays were also judged at the local level prior to submission to the FCCA. They were assessed on content, creativity, style/structure and grammar.

A formal presentation ceremony is being planned by the Ministry of Tourism for the students in the upcoming school year, where they will be rewarded with monetary and other prizes from the Ministry and tourism stakeholders.
