Parents of children who have difficulty reading or processing visual information will learn how to overcome such challenges this weekend when the Barbados Association of Reading (BAR) holds a meeting on Saturday March 9, at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, The Pine, St. Michael, at 6:00 p.m.

Guest speaker, Judith Palapala of the Irlen Institute of the Twin Cities in the United States (US) will present information on the Irlen Syndrome and the Irlen Method devised by Helen Irlen, one of the leading US experts on perceptually-based reading and learning difficulties.

According to the Irlen Institute, many children with the Syndrome are misdiagnosed as having dyslexia or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). These children may be assisted by the use of non-invasive technology that uses coloured overlays and filters to improve the brain’s ability to process visual information.

Ms. Palapala will explain how this technology could bring new hope to students by improving reading fluency, comfort, comprehension, attention, and concentration while reducing light sensitivity.

Members of the public are invited to attend the lecture.

The Barbados Association of Reading is an association of teachers, parents and literacy advocates affiliated with the International Reading Association which promotes the goal of "Building a Nation of Readers".
