Students in the Social Work programme at the Barbados Community College (BCC) will, from next week, be working to discourage aspects of bullying as well as to reduce HIV/AIDS infection among the young population on the island.

As part of an assignment for their SOWK210 course, the second year students in the BCC programme will host a community organisation project that includes an essay and poster competition for first and third form students at the Springer Memorial School.

The secondary school children will be required to highlight in essay or poster form, any area which shows how instances of either bullying or HIV/AIDS can be reduced. The essay must be 350 words and handwritten, while the poster should be no larger than 11" by 17" and can be a drawing, painting or collage.

These should be submitted to the BCC by April 18 for judging on April 23.

Prizes will be awarded to first to third place winners in each category on April 26 during the prize-giving/closing ceremony and there will also be certificates of participation for students.

A launch of the project will take place next Tuesday, March 13, at the school on Government Hill, St. Michael. The key aim of this will be to provide information to students on the two topical issues as well as other social problems in order to guide their efforts.

It starts at 10:00 a.m. and will be addressed by Principal Pauline Benjamin and ??a representative of the Juvenile Liaison Scheme, Hallam Jemmott. Chairperson of the BCC second year Social Work group, Deborah Thornhill, will also provide an overview on the concept of Community Organisation.
