Students in the Barbados Community College’s (BCC) Division of Technology will be given a demonstration on Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) at the Shallow Basin of the Barbados Coast Guard, HMBS Pelican, Spring Garden, St. Michael, tomorrow, Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The demo is being conducted by representatives from the Marine Institute of the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The Institute is a world-leading centre for marine and ocean-related career education and research.

The Barbados Community College and the Marine Institute signed an Articulation Agreement which covers the Land Surveying, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Building and Civil Engineering programmes. Articulation agreements are partnerships between colleges that can help ensure that the classes taken in community college will transfer to a four-year school.

The ROV demonstration is expected to show BCC students what is done at the Marine Institute and will give them the opportunity to operate the devices underwater. Both the BCC and the Institute are working toward hosting a ROV competition next year where students will have a chance to design and build a craft to perform specific tasks underwater.
