Young cricketers participating in the cricket component of the Barbados Defence Force’s (BDF) Sports programme will soon benefit from the skills of a host of former West Indies players.

This was revealed last Saturday by Prime Minister David Thompson, during his address at the BDF’S 30th anniversary parade at St. Ann’s Fort, The Garrison.

Mr. Thompson explained that the Defence Board, of which he is Chairman, had recently agreed to forge a partnership with the Cricket Legends of Barbados, in an effort to strengthen the cricketing arm of the sports programme.????

He noted that through the initiative, the BDF was actively involved in the development of sport in Barbados, with participants being trained and participating competitively in a number of disciplines locally, regionally and internationally.??

The Prime Minister also commended the Force for its contribution to the development of the youth generally, which he said had been done diligently and with a good measure of success.??

He pointed out that over the past 30 years, for example, the Barbados Cadets Corps had expanded from four to 21 school-based companies, along with a Sea Cadet programme, band and medical unit.

"The Corps has represented Barbados with distinction, as far as India at the Junior Commonwealth Games in October 2008," Mr. Thompson added.
