Barbados will from tomorrow, Tuesday, November 15, host a two-day meeting to discuss establishing an asset recovery inter-agency network for the jurisdictions of the entire Caribbean region.

The meeting is a collaborative effort of the Secretariat for Multi-Dimensional Security of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Regional Security Systems (RSS), and the Government of Barbados through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The meeting will bring together over 70 leading practitioners from law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities representing 25 Caribbean jurisdictions, along with key experts from existing asset recovery inter-agency networks around the globe.

The regional and international organisations present include the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, the Caribbean Community, the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime and Europol.

Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Braithwaite; Chief Justice, Sir Marston Gibson; OAS Representative to Barbados, Francis McBarnette; and Director of Public Prosecutions, Charles Leacock, are expected to address the opening ceremony.

Regional asset recovery inter-agency networks are cooperative groups of law enforcement and judicial practitioners who specialise in the field of criminal asset identification, freezing, seizure and confiscation.

Their aim is to improve international co-operation among law enforcement and judicial agencies, which in turn will provide a more effective method of depriving criminals of their illegal profits.

This initiative in the Caribbean follows on from the successful launch of asset recovery inter-agency networks in Europe, Latin America, East, West and Southern Africa and the Asia Pacific.
