Diabetic Retinopathy will be the topic of this year’s Barbados Drug Service public lecture, which will be held on Tuesday, May, 15, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.??

It will be delivered by Ophthalmologist, Dr. Sherwin Benskin.

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina) and could result in blindness.

The condition can develop in anyone who has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The longer you have diabetes, and the less controlled your blood sugar is, the more likely you are to develop diabetic retinopathy.

Prior to the lecture, between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., the public will get an opportunity to discuss their medicines with pharmacists and get information on the availability of these medicines under the Barbados Drug Service.

Bus transportation will be provided after the lecture to the Fairchild Street and Princess Alice Bus Terminals.
