As the 2024 Crop Over season draws to a close, the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) is encouraging all road users to be safe on the roads and to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their families and friends.
MTW is reminding persons to be mindful of these road safety tips as they travel on the island’s roads, especially this bank holiday weekend.
- If you plan to drink, organise your transportation beforehand. Designate a sober driver, take the bus, or hire a taxi to get you home safely. Driving intoxicated significantly affects your ability to drive safely.
- If you are feeling tired, park your vehicle in a safe area and rest. Driving while tired can impair your ability to drive safely.
- Be aware of your surroundings and park your vehicle in well-lit areas.
- Be your brother’s keeper! If your friend is intoxicated and you are sober, offer to safely drive them home. The vehicle can always be picked up later.
- DO NOT SPEED! Plan your route and set a time to leave home for your events. Be cautious on the road and drive within the speed limit. It is better to get there late than not at all.
- Focus on the road and be conscious of other road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists. Distracted driving increases the chances of motor vehicle crashes. Texting, eating, or applying makeup can wait!
- Pedestrians, revellers, and onlookers are urged to be careful on the streets and to be aware of large vehicles and trucks on the road this weekend, especially on Saturday morning for the Foreday Morning Jump, and on Monday for Grand Kadooment. Stay a safe distance away when these vehicles make turns.
