For over half a century, the Bellairs Research Institute of McGill University in Barbados has been dedicated to future-focused environmental research; and this commitment will be brought forth this month when it, hosts its festival, FWDfest, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve.
The Festival will open on Monday, May 23, when, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., Frederic Guichard and Katherine Turgeon, both of the McGill University Department of Biology, will discuss Marine Biology at Bellairs Research Institute – Research Teaching and Conservation. This will be held in the Presentation Room, Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve, Folkestone, St. James.
On Thursday, May 26, the festival will head to the Barbados Museum, Garrison, St. Michael, for a discussion on the Bellairs Research Institute – Honouring the Past and Welcoming the Future.?? The two-hour presentation will be hosted by the Director of the Institute, Susan Mahon, from 7:00 p.m.
The Festival Weekend will be packed with activities at both Folkestone and the Bellairs Institute on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28.?? From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the public can enjoy snorkel tours and water activities, exhibitions, presentations and live demonstrations, museum tours and a puppet show for children. There will also be a Future Ideas Caf?? from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, which will focus on ???building a culture of sustainability’.
That Saturday night, the area will come alive with an Alternative Energy Music and Performance Arts Show from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m.?? Entertainment will feature spoken word, dance, poetry and performances and displays from various artists, including Indrani, DJ 00 Scientist, Loveseat, the St. James Secondary School Steel Pan Band and Rhaj Paul and Luna Designs.
