Manager of the Geriatric Hospital, Everton Alleyne and Staff Nurse Pauline Carter also participated in the presentation.

The Geriatric Hospital on Beckles Road got an equipment boost yesterday when staff of the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), as part of its outreach programme in recognition of its 50th Anniversary, visited that institution and donated three bath chairs.

Acting Chief Information Officer, Erskine Callender, in handing over the equipment explained that “the BGIS is always looking to play its part in the community and wanted to reach out to its neighbours [the Geriatric Hospital] and assist where possible”.

In accepting the chairs, Manager, Everton Alleyne noted that the wealth, health and strength of the 350 patients were closely linked to the support received from non-governmental organisations. “Nothing we do can be done without the support of volunteers and persons who spend a lot of time within the institution visiting patients,” he explained.

Mr. Alleyne also urged others in society to show benevolence especially at this festive season or devote some time visiting with elderly relatives or friends housed at the institution.

Meanwhile, Marketing Officer with the BGIS, Ronnie Yearwood, who was  responsible for coordinating the event said, “the donation to the Geriatric Hospital is but part of the “Making A Difference” activities planned for the 50th year, which places  emphasis on the needs of others. The specialised equipment was the hospital’s request and we sought to source this through funds collected within the BGIS”.

Earlier this year, the BGIS donated toys and books to the children’s ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and equipment to the Children’s Development Centre.
