Nine staff members of the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) were recently rewarded for their hard work in 2009, when that department held its inaugural Web Awards.

In a presentation ceremony at the BGIS’ Bay Street headquarters on Wednesday, January 20, Acting Web Content Manager, Kathyann Husbands, stated that the awards were conceptualised as a means of recognising and rewarding those staff members whose contributions were most viewed and who individually provided most of the content for the BGIS website.

"Although the Web Content Manager is the sole person responsible for updating the site, a team effort has to occur before any material is available for upload, and I applaud all the sections for their hard work in 2009," she added.

In the category of Award of Achievement, Assistant Information Officer, Aisha Reid and Technical Operator, Mykul Elcock, were rewarded for producing the Top Radio Download, while Information Officer, Esther Jones, and Videographer, Aaron Greenidge, took the prize for the Top Television Download.?? All four received trophies and vouchers compliments of Lucky Horseshoe Steakhouse and Saloon.

For his capture of the landing of the inaugural JetBlue flight in Barbados, Stills Photographer, Charlie Pitt, won the Top Photo Award trophy and a dinner cruise on board the M.V. Harbour Master. The Most Viewed Press Story was written by Assistant Information Officer, Julie Wilson, who received a trophy and a luncheon cruise on board Tiami Catamaran Cruises.

In the final category of Most Prolific Press Officer, first place went to Information Officer, Joy-Ann Gill; second place to Assistant Information Officer, Julie Wilson; while Information Officer, Sharon Austin-Gill-Moore, placed third. The top achievers received a lunch for two at Sandy Lane Hotel and dinners for two at Apsara and Tamnak Thai Restaurants, respectively.

Awards of Appreciation were also presented to the Administration, Library and Marketing sections, with a special "Friend of the Web Award" going to Technician, Philbert Robinson.

The Acting Web Content Manager thanked corporate sponsors Sandy Lane Hotel, Apsara and Tamnak Thai Restaurants, Lucky Horseshoe Steakhouse and Saloon and Tall Ships for their generous contributions to the awards.
