The hard work and dedication has finally paid off for students who entered the recently held Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) essays and poster competitions.
The top students and schools will be presented with their prizes during an awards ceremony this Friday, December 2, in the conference room of the UN House, Marine Gardens, Christ Church, at 10:00 a.m.
Marketing Officer at the BGIS, Ronny Yearwood, said the quality of work for the entries was "very good", with many of the children showing sound knowledge of the issues surrounding child rights.
"The judges were impressed by a lot of the work.?? A lot of the effort and energy was put into creating the posters and a lot of research in writing the essays.?? We hope they would see this opportunity not as a one off but try to understand and promote the importance of child rights," Mr. Yearwood said.
One hundred and sixty-five posters and 45 essays were received for the competitions.
Prizes for the poster competition are: 1st place – $500; 2nd place – $300; and 3rd place – $200.?? The winning schools in each category – class 1 and 2 and class 3 and 4 will also receive prizes.
The prizes for the essay competition are 1st place – an Acer laptop; 2nd place – a mini laptop; and 3rd place – an Amazon Kindle.?? The winning schools in each category – first to third forms and fourth to fifth forms will also receive prizes.
All participants in the competitions, which were held under the theme What do Child Rights mean to me, will also receive certificates of appreciation.?? Winning entries will also be posted online at https://www.gisbarbados.gov.bb/ and http://www.unicef.org/.
