Government’s National Summer Camp Programme for 2010 promises to be bigger and better!
This is the word from Minister of Youth, Stephen Lashley, who said last year’s programme catered to 9,448 individuals at 69 camps. He made the comments last Saturday, while addressing the launch of a training programme for Camp Assistants at the CLICO Centre, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
Mr. Lashley told the camp assistants that their role was integral to the smooth functioning of the programme, since they would interface with campers on a regular basis.
He explained that while the director and his assistant were responsible for the administration of the camp, including the preparation of?? schedules and activities, the camp assistant would be required to ensure that the campers undertook the designated activities and participated fully.
"Any memories which will linger with the campers after the conclusion of the camp will be shaped and crafted by you, the camp assistant, and will be determined by your attitude and behaviour," Mr. Lashley opined.
According to him, working and interacting with children was a rewarding experience, since it allowed adults to see the world through their eyes. "You must have an abundance of patience and gentleness, be firm, enthusiastic and disciplined. Many times you will be required to intervene in disputes and you should demonstrate justice and fairness in all cases. Some campers will arrive at the site very early and you should be punctual to ensure that all goes well with them," he continued.
Mr. Lashley pointed out that in the past, it was agreed that there should be one camp assistant to every 10 campers to ensure they received adequate attention and supervision.?? He stressed this ratio would be maintained this year.
During the next four training sessions, which will be held on Saturdays, the camp assistants will learn about leadership, teambuilding, personal development, programme planning and management, time management, conflict resolution, HIV/AIDS awareness and health and safety.
