Biosafety will be the focus of a two-day national sensitisation workshop, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, July 5, at the Savannah Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church, at 9:15 a.m.

Hosted by the Ministry of the Environment and Drainage, the workshop is being held to raise awareness of biosafety in general, the Cartagena Protocol, to which Barbados has been party since September 2003, and the implementation of national biosafety frameworks in the Caribbean Sub-Region.

Topics to be covered during the workshop include the Status of Biosafety and Biotechnology in Barbados and the Caribbean region, the Regional Policy on Biosafety and Biotechnology and the proposed “best-fit” General Model for the Caribbean Region.

Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Dr. Denis Lowe, and Chief Agricultural Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management, Dr. Lennox Chandler, will address the opening of the workshop.
