Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steven Blackett

A Government Minister has challenged Barbadians to be proactive in their financial planning to cushion the impact from the current global economic crisis.

Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steven Blackett, made this appeal last Saturday while addressing the official launch of the Community Independence Celebrations Secretariat’s (CICS) celebrations at the Jackie Opel Amphitheatre, General Post Office, Bridgetown.

Even though gloomy economic forecasts predicted by overseas financial institutions may or may not materialise, he implored Barbadians to respond sensibly to a situation that basically “is beyond our control”.

The Minister of Culture noted that helping communities and its residents to adopt a spirit of independence should be the primary focus of the CICS’ work.

“The Secretariat will continue to work with the relevant government departments and the private sector to mobilise communities, by bringing them together through meaningful projects and activities, that would assist householders in their personal development,” he added.

Mr. Blackett lauded those corporate sponsors who had already supported the Community Independence Celebrations and he urged others to get on-board and support the various community-based projects and cultural activities, leading up to and after Independence Day on November 30.
