Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steve Blackett????

A government minister has offered young students some sound advice about making future career choices, stressing that the arts and cultural industries hold great potential for employment.

Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steve Blackett, made this point recently during the opening of a photographic exhibition entitled "Making Images".?? It was presented by the Garrison Secondary School at the George Washington House, Bush Hill, St. Michael.

Stressing that many Barbadians still viewed being a doctor or lawyer as the pinnacle of career development or the only viable way to "make it" in this society, he called such thinking "erroneous" and "outdated".

"It underscores the painful truth that many in our society stifle development in new and creative areas. One only has to look at the successes of internationally acclaimed musicians, singers, dancers or actors, and at American film producers …Mr. Jerry Bruckheimer and Steven Spielberg, certainly demonstrate the potential of the film industry for financial success. I certainly know no Barbadian doctor or lawyer who can boast an eighth of their financial prowess," the Culture Minister remarked.

According to Mr. Blackett, additional curriculum alternatives such as Film Garrison must be encouraged if every student is to have an opportunity for success.

The Culture Minister added that photography and film are worthwhile career choices, which can open many doors.

"If you have a passion for photography or film making, then by all means pursue your dream. Photography may also contribute to lucrative careers in graphic arts, web design and journalism," he maintained.

Mr. Blackett pointed out that the new Cultural Industries Bill, which would soon come before Parliament, would offer support to persons who were interested in making a career in the cultural sector.

The "Making Images" exhibition comprises photographs of land and seascapes, abstract art and portrait shots captured by the Film Garrison group throughout the academic year.??askeete@barbados.gov.bb
