Members of the public are encouraged to wear a blue ribbon to raise awareness of violence against children in all its forms.

The initiative forms part of the activities to mark Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, which runs from April 1 to 30, under the theme Speak Up, Speak Out, Report Child Abuse.

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, officials from the Child Care Board will be at Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, and at Sheraton Mall, Sargeant’s Village, Christ Church, between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., to distribute the blue ribbons and raise awareness about child abuse and its prevention.

Then on Saturday, April 16, the team will head to Massy, Warrens, St. Michael, and Massy, Sunset Crest, St. James, and to the Emerald City Supermarket, Six Roads, St. Philip, on Saturday, April 23.  They will be present at each location between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on each occasion.

The initiative of a blue ribbon pin originated in 1989, when a Virginia grandmother, named Bonnie, began wearing a blue ribbon as a tribute to her three-year-old grandson, who was killed by his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Concerned citizens all over America have worn the blue ribbon as a symbol to prevent child abuse and neglect.
