Minister of Economic Affairs and Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Dr. David Estwick

When The Barbados Manufacturers Association???s (BMA) annual trade exhibition, BMEX, is held this weekend, the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation, (BIDC) will be mounting its pavilion to highlight the journey of clay through a display entitled ???From Particles to Product???.

Noting that pottery was the first cottage industry in Barbados, the BIDC???s Business Development Officer, Chauntel Thomas, made an appeal for more locals to learn this skill and assist in the revival of the sector.

She said: ???The BIDC???s objective is to create awareness among Barbadians about the industry as an income-generating sector.?? Thus, the pavilion will showcase clay in its raw form; show the history and development of clay; its uses throughout the years and the products produced by the artists.???

Ms. Thomas added that the work of potters such as Gloria Chung; Juliana Inniss; Red Clay Potters; Bill Grace; Michelle???s Clay Gallery; Hamiliton???s Pottery; Red Clay Pottery; John Springer and Winston Jean-Paul of the Chalky Mount Potters and Bill Grace would also be on display.

As a major sponsor of BMEX since 2006, the BIDC official said mounting the pavilion was in keeping with its mandate to promote and facilitate the establishment and expansion of enterprises.

Ms. Thomas opined: ???We continue to provide support to the manufacturing industry that would allow them to showcase their work to the public at BMEX every year.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Dr. David Estwick, will deliver the feature address and declare the exhibition open on Friday, May, 29.

The exhibition, which will feature over 40 booths, will be open to the public from Saturday, May 29; Sunday, May 31; and Monday, June 1, from 10:00 a.m to 10:00 p.m each day.??

Patrons will be treated to a total package inclusive of innovative manufacturing products, the latest fashions and entertainment featuring the Royal Barbados Police Force band and the best in local talent.?? Admission to the event is adults $12 and children $5.
