In its efforts to continue to improve the quality of goods and services across the island, the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) has made the Draft CARICOM Regional Standard, Rice – Specification, Sampling, Testing and Analysis available for public comment. The draft may be viewed or downloaded from the BNSI website at http://www.bnsi.bb/ and is also available at the BNSI Library for viewing.

The standard specifies the requirements for grades of paddy, cargo rice, milled rice, cargo parboiled rice and milled parboiled rice.??It also specifies the general conditions for sampling and the methodologies for assessing the various factors used in determining the quality of rice.

??This draft CARICOM Regional Standard was formulated in an effort to improve the quality of rice being produced and sold on the local and overseas markets. It is expected that this standard would be utilised by farmers, millers, import and export operations, distributors and other related personnel, thereby promoting standardisation for this particular commodity.

??Stakeholders are asked to note this standard may be implemented with mandatory effect in order to ensure food safety.??

Persons who wish to submit comments on the draft may do so with the designated Stakeholder Comment Form, available in the Resource Centre of the BNSI website. Comments should reach the BNSI no later than Friday, August 19, and may be submitted electronically to office@bnsi.com.bb.
