The Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) could be playing a major role in developing a service standard for the island in the future.

Director, Anthea Ishmael, said the department was presently evaluating a recent request that was received from a company for assistance in the development of the standard.

"This will not change the role of the BNSI in the future because our role is one of standards development. A standard provides minimum requirements to ensure that the product or service is of acceptable quality," she reiterated.

Over the last two days, stakeholders were brought up-to-date on the components of the Barbados Quality Infrastructure, during a workshop hosted by the BNSI at the Savannah Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church.??

The Quality Infrastructure is one of the activities within component one of the US $7.29 million Modernisation of the Barbados National Standards System project.?? Other components of the programme would include modernisation of administrative areas and an upgrade of the BNSI’s physical and technological infrastructure.

When completed, the programme would enhance the competence and performance of the BNSI; improve the country’s competitiveness at the regional and international levels; strengthen the protection of consumers, and improve trade facilitation and market access for goods.
