Newly appointed Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Adriel Brathwaite, M. P., will serve in this capacity until August 30, 2010. This was explained today by an official of the Cabinet Office, who pointed out that Mr. Brathwaite, an attorney-at-law, was appointed under Section 65.2 of the Barbados Constitution.

Mr. Brathwaite has taken over from the Hon. Freundel Stuart, who last week was named as the acting Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Investment, Telecommunications, Energy, Immigration and the Civil Service for two months, following the decision of Prime Minister David Thompson to take a two-month overseas leave of absence for health reasons.

The official stated that since "the Constitution does not allow for the same person to be both Prime Minister and Attorney General, Mr. Stuart has relinquished the portfolios of Attorney General and Home Affairs for the period he is acting as Prime Minister." Consequently, Mr. Brathwaite will also serve as Attorney General for the same period.??

Mr. Stuart is currently leading the Barbados delegation at the 31st Meeting of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Jamaica. He returns home tomorrow evening. In his absence, the Hon. Ronald Jones has been acting Prime Minister.??
