The potential for technical cooperation between Brazil and Barbados, in relation to the environment, was the focus of discussions, when Brazil’s Ambassador to Barbados, Appio Claudio Acquarone, paid a courtesy call on Minister of the Environment, Dr. Denis Lowe, at his Bridgetown offices today.

Ambassador Acquarone specifically identified his country’s ethanol production programme, as one that may be of particular interest to Barbados in terms of its focus on renewable energy. He noted that while Brazil imported 60 per cent of its oil from the Middle East in the 1970s, today, approximately 60 per cent of its vehicular fleet utilised ethanol.??

Dr. Lowe, who described relations between the two countries as very strategic at this juncture, said this type of collaboration was critical in light of efforts to advance the country’s development "along a path that gave credence to environmental stewardship."

The Minister also expressed the desire to build sustainable, mutually-beneficial partnerships with Brazil in areas of natural synergies.
