Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Reverend Joseph Atherley, today met with British High Commissioner to Barbados, Duncan Taylor, who paid a courtesy call at the Minister’s Government Headquarters Office.

The two spoke at length on issues including Cricket World Cup 2007, Immigration policy and how Britain could further assist the region in disaster preparedness and relief.

The British High Commissioner told the Minister that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) “wanted to explore the possibility of expanding FM radio in the Caribbean” with the introduction of the BBC’s 24- hour World Service on a dedicated channel.

Minister Atherley said he would be delighted to view any such proposal. “In principle I personally would have no problems with such a 24 –  hour broadcast with such a highly esteemed media corporation,” he said.

Mr. Taylor said regional broadcasters need not fear any competition from such a proposed station because “the content would be strictly international news of a very high quality”.
