Statisticians from across the region are currently in Barbados “Working Together to Improve Statistics in the 21st Century and Beyond” – the theme of a series of CARICOM meetings, hosted by the Barbados Statistical Service (BSS).

The first of the three meetings, which came to an end today, was held by the Advisory Group on Statistics (AGS) at Hilton Barbados, Needhams Point, St. Michael.

Members of the AGS reviewed the outcomes and feedback from a meeting on economic indicators held earlier this year, and prepared a draft action plan for the region, including the minimum set of activities to be implemented by member countries that will inform the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The 33rd Meeting of the Standing Committee for Caribbean Statisticians will be held from next Monday, October 27, to Wednesday, October 29. Statisticians will discuss the progress, achievements and constraints faced by member states in the production of statistics and discuss the way forward.

In addition, there will be the launch of a resource consortium to support the 2010 round of censuses within the region.

The Regional Census Coordinating Committee will meet on Thursday, October 30 and Friday, October 31. The focus will be on preparations for the 2010 Population and Housing Censuses in CARICOM. Reports from member states on the status of their plans will be presented and discussed. (GA)
