The Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) will host a week of activities to commemorate Statistics Week, from October 11to 17.

On Sunday, October 11, a church service will be held at the St. John’s Parish Church, starting at 9:15 a.m.?? The following day, Monday, October 12, there will be a health awareness day at the BSS’ Headquarters, Third Floor, old National Insurance building, Fairchild Street, the City, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

During the session, members of the public will have the opportunity to get free blood sugar, cholesterol and body mass index tests, which will be administered by health practitioners from the Barbados Nurses’ Association.??

An Advocacy Forum on Statistics will be the main activity on Tuesday, October 13, commencing at 9:00 a.m.?? Speakers will include Prime Minister David Thompson who will deliver the feature address, while Minister of Economic Affairs and Empowerment, Innovation, Trade, Industry and Commerce, Dr. David Estwick, will make opening remarks, and Central Bank Governor-designate, Dr. Delisle Worrell, will give the keynote address.

The purpose of the forum is to allow policy-makers, researchers, international organisations and other entities that utilise statistics, to have an opportunity to give their views about the importance of statistics in the decision-making process.

On Wednesday, October 14, there will be presentations to staff on Pensions and Gratuities, and Kidney Disease, starting at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively, at the BSS’ headquarters.

In observance of Caribbean Statistics Day, on Thursday, October 15, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors to the Government of Barbados, Dr. Frank Alleyne, will give a presentation on the Importance of Statistics. It will take place at the BSS, starting at 10:00 a.m.?? At 2:00 p.m. on the same day, Dermatologist, Dr. Suleman Bhamjee, will speak on the subject of Dermatology, also at that location.

There will be an in-house seminar on the Household Budget Survey and the 2010 Population Housing Census at the BSS, on Friday, October 16.??

A dinner and awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 17 at the Dining Club, Building K, Newton Industrial Park, Christ Church. It will get under way at 6:30 p.m., and will bring the curtain down on the department’s week of activities.
