Government will be rolling out Builders of Barbados, a programme which will highlight those citizens who have done great things.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made the disclosure to the media today, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, after announcing the creation of the Barbados Heritage District, including a memorial, a major global research institute, and a museum in Newton Plantation, dedicated to accurately recounting the historic and contemporary impact of slavery on Barbados.

Ms. Mottley said the Builders of Barbados programme would be separate from the National Heroes and National Honours initiatives.

“Builders of Barbados must be able to allow us to identify those persons who are critical to the story that has led to us being here. There are too many examples of people who have done great things, but whose story has not been captured.

“We want this to be in the Office of the President, under her patronage and responsibility, but working directly with the Ministry of Culture…. We want to ensure that it is not subject to interpretations that may be sectorial or partisan of any nature,” she stressed.

The Prime Minister noted that there was already an initiative where over 700 Barbadians had written essays of 800 to 1,300 words, which captured their contribution to the island.

“We want to build on that and we want formally to establish the Builders of Barbados [programme].  So, you will hear more about it as we go forward,” Ms. Mottley assured.
