Businesses near the Fairchild Street Market are advised to turn off their air conditioning units this weekend during the removal of the asbestos roof from the market.

The removal of the roof will commence on Saturday, June 23, from 8:00 p.m. and continue until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 24.?? The work will resume at 8:00 p.m. the same day and continue until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 25.

This process will be repeated every weekend until the work has been completed.

Senior Environmental Officer at the Environmental Protection Department, (EPD) Trevor King, cautioned businesses in the area to turn off their air conditioning units to prevent dust particles or fibre, which are likely to become airborne during the removal, from being sucked into the units and released into the buildings.

Those businesses likely to be affected are: Chefette Restaurants Limited, Kentucky, the National Insurance Building, the Treasury Building, and the Bridgestreet Mall.

"Their units are on the roof so they will be more susceptible," Mr. King pointed out.

He added that the operations of the Transport Board were also taken into consideration in planning for the removal of the asbestos roof, and stressed that most of the work would be carried out after these businesses cease their operations.

Meanwhile, the public is also being urged to avoid the area during the removal of the asbestos roof. "The work is being done at night to eliminate pedestrian traffic as much as possible," Mr. King stressed, adding that all necessary parties were informed about the pending removal.

The Senior Environmental Officer noted that the removal of the asbestos roof and its transportation to the dump at Rock Hall, St. Philip, would be done under the direction of an EPD officer, to ensure that regulations were followed.
