The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment/Prince’s Trust International, Get Hired programme got high marks from the Chief Executive Officer of Platinum Services Barbados Ltd., Mrs. Shelly Williams.
Mrs. Williams was the featured private sector presenter on the second day of the two-day employability programme and the latest partner to support the initiative.
At the start of her presentation, Mrs. Williams expressed her thanks for being included in the Get Hired programme, noting that her company had received over 2,000 résumés, and it was difficult to effectively vet each potential candidate.
She said that the programme allowed her to directly meet and observe young people who were eager and prepared to enter into the workplace.
When it came to the question of what she was looking for in the ideal candidate, Mrs. Williams stressed that attitude was one of the most important traits, especially within her sector.
Also giving praise to the programme was Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Dwight Sutherland, who made an unannounced visit to greet and encourage the young participants.
The Minister stated that the Get Hired programme was one of his favourite initiatives within the Ministry because of the opportunities it afforded young people.
Speaking directly to the participants, Mr. Sutherland said: “Programmes like Get Into and Get Hired give you the opportunity to showcase who you are, what you have to offer ….” He encouraged each participant to see opportunities in everything and to take full advantage of them.
During the event, participants were given insight into Platinum Services Barbados Ltd., which provides luxury concierge services to exclusive high end visitors, including VIP Fast Track, Meet & Greet Concierge Services, and Luxury Private Jet Charters in Barbados.
The programme concluded with the 15 participants being interviewed for available positions of Concierge and Red Cap Porters at the company.
Following his interview, participant Kobe Harding praised the programme. “The programme was a nice experience, it helped me a lot and I would recommend it to a lot of the youth,” he said.
