The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) is working assiduously to rectify burst mains in a number of districts, and has apologised for the resultant disruption in service to residents in these and surrounding areas.

According to officials from the BWA’s Marketing/Communications Department, today the BWA sustained bursts in four-inch mains at Cottage Road, St. George; Horse Hill, St. Joseph and 5th Avenue, Ocean City, St. Philip, as well as in a six-inch main at Newcastle, St. John.

The Authority is also today completing repairs to mains in South District,

St. George and Ruby, St. Philip, while investigating reports of suspected burst mains in Castries Road, Cave Hill, St. Michael and Charnocks in ??Christ Church.

Today’s disruptions follow on the heels of reported problems in South District and Dash Valley in St. George; Briar Hall Road and Warners in Christ Church; Cambridge, St. Joseph; Clarkes Gap, Bush Hall in St. Michael; Four Roads in St. John; Maynards in St. Peter and Ruby in St. Philip, as recent as?? yesterday.

Earlier this year, Environment Minister, Dr. Denis Lowe, underscored the need for the BWA to become financially viable, in light of a "very comprehensive" water infrastructure programme, which is in the pipeline.

The programme, Dr. Lowe said, included, the refurbishment of reservoirs; the construction of?? a reverse osmosis plant?? to address issues involving nitrates, as well as a "massive" mains replacement initiative expected to cost in excess of BDS $300 million, to ameliorate problems with the existing network, which dates back some 100 years.????cgaskin@barbados.gov.bb
