Concerned about the number of contaminants affecting the quality of this country’s water, the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) will construct a US $25 million dollar reverse osmosis plant to ensure the island continues to have a clean supply.

BWA Project Manager, Stephen Lindo, explained that six firms were shortlisted to submit bids, costing and the design of the plant. The project will be a public/private partnership, with the company designing, financing, building and operating the facility at The Belle, St. Michael.??

According to him, several other options were explored with regards to water treatment before finally deciding on reverse osmosis.

"This would assist in reducing the nitrate levels at The Belle as well as improving the water quality in the St. Michael catchment…We are hoping, according to our schedule, to get this to Cabinet at least by April next year and hopefully once a contract is awarded perhaps in two or three months, after that we would be able to start the process," Mr. Lindo said.
