Although 19 schools participated in the Schools Exhibits of Barbados Manufacturers??? Exhibition (BMEX), their contributions were deemed to be of the highest quality.

The creativity, innovation and talents exhibited by those from the 14 primary and five secondary schools were lauded and rewarded with certificates of participation bestowed on them at a presentation ceremony held last Friday by the Media Resource Department (MRD), at the Elsie Payne Complex.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Harry Husbands, praised the MRD for its over 20 years of participation in BMEX.

He also commended the sponsors and teachers for their involvement. Expressing the hope that all students would see the activity as ???an integral part??? of their education, he noted that they would have worked very hard to have the very high quality of exhibits shown this year as in the past.

In the primary school category, Charles F. Broome Memorial walked away with the first place prize for their exhibit In a Nut Shell, which looked at the use of coconut and its by-products.

Second prize and third prize also in the junior category went to Holy Innocents Primary and Belmont respectively. Holy Innocents Primary???s exhibition From Garbage to Glitter, highlighted products one could make from old CDs and DVDs.

Singling out Holy Innocents Primary in his congratulatory remarks, Senator Husbands said he was extremely pleased to see a school he had taught at years ago, a small rural school, ???participating in national activities and coming out victorious in the end???.

In the secondary division, where competition was considered ???quite close??? according to Media Resource Officer, Michelle Griffith, Princess Margaret Secondary School came out most successful with furniture made from pine wood.

Placing second with their coconut, ginger ice-cream and bay leaf syrup, was The Lodge School, followed closely by The Irving Wilson School, whose students displayed eye-catching handmade jewellery.

A special prize went to the Grantley Adams Memorial School for commitment demonstrated by its Cosmetology students, over the years, to participating in BMEX. ???It???s not a case of if they will be involved but when,??? said Ms. Griffith said of the school.

The Alleyne School claimed the Most Innovative School Exhibit award, a new prize which was donated by major sponsors, Barbados Light and Power Company Ltd.
