The Barbados Cadet Corps is redoubling its efforts to attract youth to positive activities based on the ethos of discipline and teamwork.

That is the word from Cadet Executive Officer, Major Alva Holder, who said this was necessary, especially since there are so many negative influences in society for the youth to navigate.

He added that this new focus was being spearheaded by Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Errol Brathwaite, who wants to encourage positive behaviour among the nation’s youth.

According to Major Holder, the Barbados Cadet Corps would be embarking on its 2017 to 2018 Central Recruiting Programme shortly and approximately 300 recruits were expected to participate in the developmental training.

He noted that this group would include students of public and private secondary schools who recently registered to join the Cadet Corps’ ranks, as well as young members of youth organisations which were invited to take part in the programme.

They are: the Barbados 4H Foundation, Barbados Boys’ Scouts Association, The Girl Guides Association of Barbados, Barbados Landship Association, St. John Ambulance Association, Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade, and Barbados Red Cross Society.

Participants will be exposed to several topics, including First Aid, Citizenship, Drug Awareness, Healthy Living, Environmental Awareness and Protection, Dress and Deportment, Responsible Use of Information Technology and Social Media, as well as Drill, which is the basis for teamwork.

Major Holder expressed the view that “this youth development training will provide the right footing for these young persons to mature into good citizens, capable of coping with challenges and being positive examples for others in the community”.

The training will commence on Saturday, October 7, with an opening ceremony at Harrison College, at 9:00 a.m. Recruits and their parents/guardians should arrive by 8:30 a.m.
