Poverty in Barbados and how it impacts particular sections of the population will be addressed at a one-day Country Assessment of Living Conditions (CALC) Conference, being held next Friday, January 29, at the Caribbean Development Bank.??

Entitled ???Importance of the CALC to Barbados’, it is being hosted by the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment, Urban and Rural Development, and will serve to deepen awareness of poverty issues among stakeholders at the forefront of the fight against poverty.??

Participants are expected to be drawn from the National Assessment Team, which has the overall responsibility of coordinating the CALC; non-governmental and international organisations concerned with poverty reduction; and heads of departments. ??????????

Minister with responsibility for Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, will deliver the feature address, after which there will be six thematic presentations and an open discussion.???? The topics to be covered include "Elderly persons and poverty", "Disabled persons and poverty", and "Constituency Councils: A scaled-up approach to community-driven poverty reduction in Barbados".??

The overall objective of the CALC is to assess current conditions affecting the welfare of people, identify policies, strategies, action programmes and projects that would reduce the extent and severity of poverty here. The study would emphasise analyses of the poverty situation for men, women, youth and children; the processes that generate and maintain conditions conducive to poverty; existing responses to the poverty situation; and the means available for more vigorous and effective actions to reduce poverty.??
