Young Barbadians are being urged to write more, including journals and books.

Minister of Youth, Family and Sports, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, said not many people were interested in writing. "They say writing and reading is a dying art, but I believe that it is not. I believe that having books like this that we can relate to would get more young people reading and more people wanting to write and we need to see more of that," she stressed.

Dr. Byer Suckoo made the comments last night at the launch of Melanie Springer’s book, "Pearl – A Caribbean Story" at the Barbados Museum.

She described the book as "captivating" and congratulated the author on the "bold step" she had taken. She added that it was good to have Caribbean literature to read, explaining that we in this region could relate to it.????

Ms. Springer started writing the book 13 years ago and the Minister applauded her determination. "After three years, persons would have given up, but you have continued and persevered and now you have something tangible that you can show for all of your efforts," Dr. Byer Suckoo noted.

"Pearl – A Caribbean Story" is not yet available for sale in Barbados, but it may be purchased online from Amazon.com or Barnes and noble.com.

Copies of the book were also presented to the Ministry of Youth, the main library of the University of the West Indies and the Barbados Community College.
