Individuals, schools or community groups who have made a significant contribution to waste minimisation in the form of composting, or separating recyclables from the waste stream are to be rewarded for their efforts!

According to Government the Solid Waste Management Coordinator, Thora Lorde, nominations are being sought for special awards to be presented at the annual 4 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) Fair. It is slated to take place on Saturday, February 5, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Nominations are open to individuals, church groups, community or sports groups and schools. They must include a brief rationale, outlining exactly what nominees have been doing, and for how long. They must also indicate where individuals or organisations are located.

"Do they coordinate collection efforts, take items back for recycling, provide drop off or collection areas or compost? Let us know!" Ms. Lorde indicated.

The Solid Waste official added that specific areas to look for would include whether the nominee provided transportation for persons in the community to take items to recyclers, provided drop off or collection areas, coordinated collection efforts within their community or had been composting successfully.??

The deadline for nominations is Friday, January 14, 2011.
