A call has gone out for the revival of work done by secondary students in the technical and vocational areas and for it to be displayed as in the past.
This appeal came from Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, as he addressed a prize-giving ceremony today for schools which participated in BMEX 2012, held May 25 to 28, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael
The awards ceremony took place in the Conference Room of the Media Resource Department (MRD).
Recounting that as a teacher he had taken primary school students to Queen’s Park for an annual exhibition, then sponsored by the Barbados Lumber Company, Minister Jones said more had to be done with respect to exhibits from technical and vocational students.
"There is a need for revival of that work done by our students… This BMEX exhibition is good but it doesn’t release schools from that other area of development of their work," Mr. Jones noted.
Referring to the efforts of the St. Leonard’s Boys’ Secondary School, he said: "A school that has always done [well] in these technical and vocational areas.. The technical wing has done tremendous work only to be followed by the St. Lucy Secondary School (now the Daryll Jordan Secondary School) and Princess Margaret Secondary School."
He noted that the MRD, which was responsible for the Schools Exhibits each year, would continue to organise the annual BMEX exhibition, but he conceded that it might be necessary to invite a major sponsor to aid in the revival of the display of the technical and vocational work of our schools.
The Minister commended the work shown at BMEX describing it as excellent and of a high quality, and said he remained impressed by, among others, the filtration project of the Holy Innocents’ School, which made use of indigenous material within the environment. The contribution of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association, parents, and schools was also recognised and staff of the MRD lauded for taking on "the responsibility to ensure that all of the work was collected and displayed.
Meanwhile, Chief Audio Visual Aids Officer of the MRD, Walter Harper, in his address, urged secondary schools to display more work at the annual BMEX.?? He said: "We want to, in 2013, concentrate on the secondary schools and we are starting all like now because it is there in the secondary schools that you have the genesis of manufacturing in Barbados and as such we want to see more schools do like St. Leonard’s Boys’ [Secondary School] and produce better quality exhibits."
As he spoke to the need for more funding for his department to meet the cost of facilitating the schools’ exhibition at BMEX, Mr. Harper added: "We have invested thousands of dollars in display boards and other audio visual aids equipment to improve our display next year. So, next year, we are looking at bigger and better things and we hope that all of you who won awards today will be there next year participating and be equally successful."?? ??
