The region’s CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) have been encouraged to put their plans into action.

This advice was given by Dean of the CYA Corps, Charde Desir, who spoke to the CYAs from 13 CARICOM and Associate Member States during a Capacity Building Workshop held in Guyana, recently.

During his address at the opening ceremony, Mr. Desir reminded the CYAs of their responsibility to the region’s youth and urged them to use the workshop to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Echoing the Dean’s sentiments, Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, advised the CYAs to take initiatives within their respective territories, in order to effect the change they wished to see, instead of waiting on the Secretariat or their Ministries, whose processes may not allow for expedited movement on projects.

The Secretary-General and his Deputy, Manorma Soeknandan, had discussions with the CYAs to hear their issues and to provide guidance on the way forward.

From this regional interaction, two Action Plans were developed by the CYAs to engage the youth of the region on the issues of education and agriculture. These fall under two of the six CARICOM Youth Development Goals – Education and Economic Empowerment; and Health and Well-being.
