Minister of Family, Youth, Sports and the Environment, Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo

Family support is especially important in the life of a differently-abled child.

This message was emphasised by Minister of Family, Youth, Sports and the Environment, Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo, as she delivered the feature address at the opening ceremony of the Barbados Organisation of Parents of the Disabled’s (OPOD) Camp Friendship. It was staged under the theme, ‘More than Able’, this morning at the Wesley Hall Infants’ School.

Dr. Byer-Suckoo encouraged the campers not to let any disability stand in their way, but rather, “if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again, and as I always like to say – and try and try and try until you reach that goal”. Dr. Byer-Suckoo also lauded the camp’s volunteers who gave of their time every year by offering their services to the summer camp.

Special Envoy for Persons with Disabilities, Roslyn Hurley, joined with Dr. Byer-Suckoo in impressing upon campers that they can achieve whatever they desired.

“We disabled people tend to believe that there is a lot we cannot do, but the sky is the limit, and you can achieve whatever you want to achieve,” she said. Ms. Hurley also congratulated the parents of children with disabilities for working through the trials which befall them every day.

Camp Friendship is a 16-day summer camp which was first established 22 years ago, in 1986.
