Barbados will join the rest of the Caribbean in taking part in the CARIBE WAVE 2013 exercise on Wednesday, March 20.

This will see Barbados taking part in a table top exercise at the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), Warrens, St. Michael, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The exercise will involve public and private sector agencies with disaster management responsibilities, and will present participants with a simulated emergency, designed to elicit constructive discussion to assess plans, policies and procedures.

Simultaneously, the Technical Standing Committee on Coastal Hazards (TSCCH), the coordinating body for the CARIBE WAVE 13 exercise in Barbados, in collaboration with the St. John District Emergency Organsation, will also stage a functional exercise in the Zoares, Martin’s Bay and St. Margaret Village communities on the Eastern coast of the island.

That exercise will also begin at 8:30 a.m., and members of the media are asked to assemble at the Bay Tavern in Martin’s Bay, St. John. This will be followed by a press briefing at DEM, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The CARIBE WAVE 2013 exercise will provide an opportunity for Barbados to exercise operational lines of communications, review tsunami response procedures, and promote tsunami preparedness. Regular exercising of response plans is critical to maintaining readiness for an emergency.??This is particularly true for tsunamis, which are infrequent, but high impact events.

This is the second year Barbados will be participating in the regional exercise.
