Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, reported that Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have congratulated Guyana on its assumption of the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 (G77) and China.

He made this announcement at the recently concluded 31st Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM, held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in Barbados.

The G77 is the largest inter-governmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which comprises 134 member nations.

According to the Group of 77 website, the G77 provides “the means for the countries of the south to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system, and promote South-South cooperation for development.”

Prime Minister Skerrit said that the Chairmanship of Guyana should set the tone for improving unity.

“The upcoming Third South Summit in Uganda in 2020 under the chairmanship of Guyana is expected to set the tone of enhancing the unity and cohesion of the group. We believe that the Group of 77 and China is a very important entity for the furtherance of CARICOM causes, and our participation is very important, and therefore we see the assumption of chairmanship by Guyana as a very important step in that direction,” he stated.
